SLUF was established in 1995 as "NOVIB Partners Forum on Sustainable Land Use in Ethiopia and Eritrea". In February 2002, it was renamed as Sustainable Land Use Forum (SLUF) and registered by the Federal Ministry of Justice as a national Non-governmental organization (NGO).

SLUF is a membership organization. Membership is open to all organizations engaged in Natrural Resource Protection and Sustainable Land Management. Currently its members are 20 consisting of 3 international and 17 local NGOs. One of the international NGOs is Honourary Member.
